Thanks for the email! It looks like it's trying to use pulse audio driver, on my system I checked and it's selecting alsa sound driver. I will try and get it to use pulse on my system and see if I can reproduce this. Will post more here as I figure it out.

Thank you.

Hi hero1900!

Okay I did look into this a little bit, and I have what might be a solution for you and also any other linux users who may have issues with audio.

The issue seems to be around SDL and PulseAudio which is the default sound system for newer versions of Ubuntu. Fortunately it looks like other audio backends can be installed concurrently.

Please try installing these packages, from the terminal you can do:

Code:
sudo apt-get install libsdl1.2debian-all
sudo apt-get install gnome-alsamixer alsa-oss

The first installs all audio drivers for sdl, and the second installs (I think) lower-level alsa drivers. It looks like maybe the alsa interface is somehow emulated without installing the "alsa-oss" package but to be honest I don't know for sure.

Side note: recently on my Linux box I noticed a big increase in sound latency to the game. As I have been working on so many unrelated things to releasing the game I hadn't really noticed until after the game was out, that there was almost 0.5 sec of audio lag! This is totally a bummer to me. However, installing gnome-alsamixer and alsa-oss has brought the audio lag down to a reasonable amount.

So the above might be worthwhile for anybody to try on Linux, as it may reduce the audio lag even if your audio is already working.

Please let me know if the above has solved your issue. The music for the game is fantastic, the composer is incredibly talented so it would be a shame to miss out!

Package libsdl1.2debian-all is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
However the following packages replace it:
libsdl1.2debian

E: Package 'libsdl1.2debian-all' has no installation candidate

so i couldnt really install it on my ubuntu 12.04 but for the second one it installed well but no sound appears

Hmmmm... As apt/dpkg hints, you could try to install libsdl1.2debian.

Anyways, I have to say that PulseAudio is kind of a pain. If you really don't need all the fancy stuff (usb audio, mixing a lot of multimedia applications, etc), switching to ALSA might help a lot with many games.

Ah, yes. Please try installing libsdl1.2debian, and let me know if that fixes it. You could also try installib libsdl1.2debian-alsa.

Please let me know if you're able to get sound working. Thank you!

libsdl1.2debian already installed (by default) but alsa one is also not available on 12.04. so at the end still its not working for now hope there is way to make it work with pulse audio (default installation).

please?

Hey just a quick update on this issue. I was not able to get pulseaudio compatability or 64 bit linux packages (or, alas, .tar.gzs) in time-- this isn't because they aren't a priority but it's just that this update is mostly centered around certain game breaking bugs that are critical, rather than improving compatability.

I would like to get the game working with pulseaudio if at all possible, so that's the plan eventually. I don't have an ETA on this. However there *should* be a workaround somehow, the package needed may be called something slightly different than "sdl1.2debian-alsa"; if you search your packages, for "alsa" or "sdl1.2" you may see a package name that is promising. Sorry that's all I've got!

And cycyx thanks for helping out =)

Well, I must say that PulseAudio creeps me out so I'm glad to find solutions... J

What I have in mind is forcing SDL to use the correct audio output.

Apparently, libsdl1.2debian-all (or libsdl1.2debian) contains all the audio drivers.

So hero1900, can you please try to force SDL to use PulseAudio?
Code:
export SDL_AUDIODRIVER="pulse"; therealtexas

Or ALSA?
Code:
export SDL_AUDIODRIVER="alsa"; therealtexas

Thanks for posting this, I am going to look at this tomorrow. I've upgraded my ubuntu partly so I can test this better.

Weird...

When you use the alsa driver, can you tell us what the game detects (just paste the audio part of the output)?

- audio driver: alsa
