Calvin,

I was wondering if you could share a bit about the engine and tools you used to create The Real Texas? Did you create the engine? How are your dialog trees put together? Does programming go faster with or without pants? Etc.

Thanks,
Matt

Matt!! =) INDIE HUGS

1- It's a custom engine in C++/OpenGL, but that's just the low-level stuff. The game itself is written mostly in lua.

2- Dialog trees are programmed in lua, and it's basically a combination of tables (e.g., matching keywords to phrases) with messy coding to decide what options should appear in those tables. The keyword system is automatic, for instance a part of a dialog tree might look like

local Dialog = {
name = "My name is [Shoe]",
shoe = "Don't tread on me, man!<p>I don't know what my parents were thinking, ok?"
}

(* note: not in any way at all related to the actual game)

So like, the parser sees [Shoe] and highlights it, adds it to the keyword list. The option to type in "shoe" is always there from the start, whether or not it's on the keyword list. Then outside of this code would be quest logic to decide what dialog tree and/or what parts should be shown.

3- For me, programming goes faster with pants ON.

HEY is there another pegjam this year?

Thanks, cool to know. That's awesome you made your own engine.

There was one the weekend of the Indie Game: The Movie premiere. Alec hinted there may be a summer one as well, but I haven't heard anything since.
